Queen Seon Deok. Best. Drama. EVER. I love historical dramas and the very first one I watched was a Chinese historical drama way back when we first moved to Vancouver. I even got Boyfriend to start watching it but then we both love intense shows with lots of action (and martial arts fight scenes). My favorite characters are Mishil (pure evil bitch… I love her) and Alcheon-Rang. Who were yours?

Rimmel Vinyl Bronze Lip Gloss. They are shiny, lightweight, tastes/smells good and isn’t sticky. Don’t you hate it when it’s windy and your hair gets stuck on your lips?

Mango Juice with Coconut Milk, Mango + Pomelo chunks and Sago. Mother actually got me addicted to this drink and I’m craving for it everyday. Not good. Check out the review @ Vancouver’s favorite foodie blog, although I usually get it at Little Bean in Yoahan.

Upright Stationary Bikes. My new favorite cardio machine (at the moment) is the stationary bike but I can’t wait till the weather gets warmer and go biking for real. Except I’ll have to go buy a new bike first… I haven’t owned one since elementary school when my friends and I had a little bike crew where we’d go out every night and rampage our neighborhood with our 12-year-old selves. Anyway, do you prefer the upright or recumbent bikes and why?

Sesame Mochi Ice Cream. No, not my puppy but mochi is sooo good. I think I ate a bunch every night for the past two weeks because it was on special at T&T and I stocked up.

Investing in good quality workout gear is important and a great investment. Wouldn’t you rather spend more on quality [yoga] pants than $10 sweats at Urban Planet or something that will stretch and pill after a couple washes? Quality materials don’t change shape, will keep you dry, don’t hold odor and can last you years even after lots of washes.

Your workout gear should be:

comfortable

non-restrictive

form-fitting

But I strongly believe that functional AND AESTHETICAL workout clothing is essential; functional— points listed above and aesthetics purely for motivation. It doesn’t hurt to look good at the gym.

Know your body shape:

General rule of thumb: don’t wear baggy, shapeless clothing!

Banana? Create curves with pops of color [like along the waist line and the side of your waist/hips], interesting cuts, fun details [like scrunching along the side of your waist], padded sports bras, and fitted pants that lifts your bum with some flare to curve you out.

Apple? Tops that are fitted around the chest but looser around the belly, ends a little past the waist [with a A-line bottom] will give an illusion of slimming and fitted pants with a thick or roll-down waist will give an illusion of flatter stomach. Avoid tight-fitting tops and pants with a slim colored waist band.

Pear? Wear a lighter color top to draw attention away from your lower body and slim-fitting, dark-colored pants with slimming vertical stripes and a small flare to balance your body out.

Hourglass? The easiest shape to work with! Accentuate your curves with v-necks and scoop necks, slim-fitted clothing, details around the waist to show it off and flared pants. But really, you can practically wear anything… just don’t cover up too much or else you might look bulkier.

Random tips and things I noticed:

Black is always chic and slimming.

Dressing in one color from head to toe can make for a longer and leaner silhouette.

Dress for your activity: layering for the outdoors, flexible fabrics with lycra for yoga, breathable fabrics to soak up sweat for activities like Bikrams Yoga, etc.

Wearing proper shoes is extremely important, especially if you’re a runner.

Cotton allows you to breathe BUT can weight you down with all the moisture it soaks up so only wear it for low impact activities like yoga. It also doesn’t hold it’s shape, which is why I don’t waste my money on cotton— I prefer synthetics.

Clothing with breathable materials and moisture-wick technology absorbs and dries quickly (eg. polyester, nylon and spandex). Wear for high impact activities where you may sweat a lot.

A good sports bra is essential. No one wants to see your nipples, please… or you don’t want anyone to get distracted and drop 100lb weights on their head.

Tube tops are NOT your friend at the gym.

If you have nice shoulders, v-necks makes them look even better!

Flared pants are NOT a good idea for biking; they might get caught in your bike. I don’t like running in them either because the fabric slaps against your legs which annoys the hell out of me.

If you have a long torso and hips, pants in a single color will only make it look longer unless you’re wearing a long enough tank top to split it up. Look for pants with a different colored waist bands.

Pants with a thick waistband that’s in a different color makes your hip look smaller. Pants with a thin waistband seems to make it look wider.

Flat-[Asian]-Ass-Syndrome? Pants with stripes on the bum can make your flat ass look less flat.

Lifting gloves will protect your hands from cuts, calluses and blisters. Trust me, you’ll want a pair if you are going to lift weights.

Great places to shop: Lululemon, PH8, Fit Couture, Athletica, Victoria’s Secret,

I’m so proud to be Canadian. I’m so proud of Vancouver for hosting such a great Winter Olympic. We had our tumbles but it was the best two weeks of my life!! And I knew Vancouver could party but not like this… our downtown was flooded with people and packed every single day and night for the last 17 days. I don’t mean to brag, but the media has stated that the passion, pride and enthusiasm has never been like this in any past Olympics in any city. We threw a great party!

We won the most gold medals ever in a Winter Olympic and every single hockey game meant a crazy night of food, alcohol and good friends but the highlight was of course the GOLD MEDAL HOCKEY GAME with us against USA. Tickets were worth way more than even Super Bowl tickets, unfortunately, I wasn’t one of those lucky people who got to attend (even if I had tickets, I wouldn’t sell it for $100,000). Instead we lined up at 7-freaking-AM at Edgewater Casino (opened at 10) which was totally worth it because we had the best seats in the house, beer was only $3, got hammered by 12pm (good thing because they closed the downtown liquor stores at 2pm), saw Po (the red Teletubby) in a Canada jersey, got to see Canada beat USA in overtime (which made the game even better) and celebrated by jumping up and down, screaming, crying, singing and hugging everyone around us for an entire 45 minutes until we finally left the building and took it to the streets. I don’t think I’ve touched so many strangers in my life and even got some topless dude’s chest smacked in my face. Yuck. My boyfriend high-fived so many people so I was scared he’d get some hand-STD and almost broke my horn driving home. I would die to relive that moment again!

Canadians, gracious about absolutely everything except hockey, when they become just like Americans.

Vancouver literally erupts when we won gold (at about 1:19). Video was taken from across the river from downtown.

Sorry USA, you guys played a GREAT game but hockey is OUR game. That American guy was seriously soooo sad after the game and I felt kinda bad… but not really. Hyukhyuk.

I’ve also never ate and drank so much nor spent so much money on food and drinks during the last two weeks. I can’t wait to get back into the grind though… well maybe just not drink that much but will continue eating that much.

I’m so sad that it’s over. AND YES IT WAS SO WORTH MY TAX MONEY.

And just for the record, it’s not BOOOOOOOO… it’s LUUUUUUUUUU! We’re cheering for our Canada/Canucks goalie!

Now it’s back to boring, uneventful, un-Olympic life. Sigh. Well, the Paralympics are coming up… I wonder how the atmosphere will be like in Vancouver?

Write down your routine before heading to the gym. I always draft my workout routine in my fitness journal the day before [after writing the current entry]. I always get excited about my workouts this way.

Work out in the morning? Sleep in your gym clothes (not the dirty, sweaty ones!!) so you can head straight to the gym as soon as the alarm rings. Getting dressed, especially on cold winter mornings was the biggest barrier for me.

Eat carbs before your workout. Carbs are your body’s main source of fuel and trust me, you will feel motivated and unstoppable when you feel that rush of energy. My favorite pre-workout snack is a simple banana. Nomnom.

Challenge yourself everyday. Try to beat personal bests and always push yourself to max out the intensity. That’s why recording your workouts is important so you’ll have a record of your progress.

Hate long, boring cardio sessions? Increase the intensity and reduce the time! You can get an even better work out in a fraction of the time. Have you tried HIIT or doing hills in the highest intensity or fastest speed possible? Tabata intervals with Plyometrics?

When doing core exercises and you’re just starting out of course you should look at yourself in the mirror to make sure you have the right posture but once you got the handle on that, I find that closing your eyes to better concentrate on tightening your core helps you to really feel it.

Get a workout buddy. I like to workout alone but if you don’t, a workout buddy could be fun and motivational. Make sure to find someone who is motivated and will force you do 50 extra push-ups for the session you missed the day before.

Get in and get out. The gym is NOT a place for socializing. Nothing pisses me more than when I see people lifting 2lb weights and chatting/gossiping non-stop and wasting space.

Don’t bother people when they’re doing cardio!!!! I still don’t understand why people try to start a full conversation when I’m struggling to catch my breath, sweat is dripping down my face and my headphones are on full-blast. Not to mention, I’m not wearing glasses/contact so I don’t even know who you are (yes I’m that blind)! Sooo inconsiderate and annoying.

Stop thinking and just do it. Stop thinking about working out (and dreading it), just throw on your gear and head to the gym. Tired after a round of your circuit? Stop sulking, clear your head of any lazy thoughts and just do it again. The quicker you do it, the faster it is over.

Talk about it. Write about it. I find that when you have an online fitness journal, you don’t want to look like a slacker to your readers so you’ll never miss a workout. Maybe it’s just me though because I have this thing with pride.

Hyukhyukhyuk. I just had to publish that quote somewhere on the blog. We had an embarrassing lost to the USA but it was a GREAT GAME!! It wasn’t anyone’s fault that we lost except for Boyfriend’s because he left his jersey at my house (like how the Canucks got kicked out of the playoffs last year because my friend went to the washroom at a certain time).

It’s alright though… game’s still on. GO TEAM CANADA!!

Here’s my 9700 review after using it for about a month. Note, this Blackberry is also known as the “Bold 2.” I upgraded to this from the Javelin.

Pros:

Faster! The web browsing is faster but nothing to “wow” about compared to my old Javelin on a 2G network. Apps like Ubertwitter and receiving files on BBM are a lot faster though.

Trackpad!! I was playing around with Boyfriend’s Blackberry the other day and the trackball felt so weird… can’t imagine ever using it again.

My fat fingers are no longer an issue! Better keyboard than the Javelin (but I still like the 8320 Curve’s better).

Text messages are linked … BBM style!

SPEAKERS ARE AMAZING! Well compared to older Blackberry models and even my 3rd generation iPod touch.

Battery life is a HUGE improvement.

It’s compatible with the Javelin’s micro-USB ports so I don’t have to replace any accessories since I have a gazillion chargers lying around everywhere (home, work, Boyfriend’s, car, etc.). My biggest fear is a dying Blackberry.

Awesome resolution and bright screen.

It’s the perfect size, which is the same as the Javelin but smaller than the chunky [original] Bold.

Cons:

Leather backing looks tacky.

Can’t seem to set my right convenience key to show ALL “messages” like I usually do with older Blackberry models. Right now, I can only set it to SMS/MMS OR Messages (BBM/email/etc) and not both. Am I missing something?

I love how text messages are linked in a chat like BBM but I always forget that I’m texting someone and send them a billion in a row which they probably want to punch me in the face for.

My calendar alerts can’t seem to be silenced even though it’s set in my profiles.

Rating: 9/10
I only wish there was a bigger screen. I have to admit the numbers are biased because I’ll always give Blackberries a high score.

I know iPhones can do a lot but here 10 Things iPhones Can’t Do, But Blackberries CAN!

We use to walk by stores that sold apparel with our the Canadian maple leaf on it and we thought it was lame to wear any “Canadian” gear. Now with the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, I’ve never been so proud to be Canadian! I honestly didn’t care nor felt any excitement for the Olympics until the morning of the opening ceremony on Friday and now I’m beaming with Canadian pride. It`s amazing how your perspective can totally change in one day.

My favorite quote so far is by Walter Gretzky when he said his parents were European commoners and back then, they would’ve never been able to participate in an Olympic torch relay. But here in America, everyone can because we are all equal.

Like Becca said, our opening ceremony cannot compete with Beijing because we don’t have over a billion people to tax nor do we have such a rich and awesome history like China’s to brag about but I think we did a good job [displaying Canada's culture and history] …except for the girl who butchered our national anthem. Anyway, I doubt anyone could beat Beijing (they rocked it!) unless the Olympics were held in North Korea where Kim Jong Il would imprison his people if they don’t give a spectacular performance.

It’s true, we live in the best country in the world and the most livable city in the world. Sure, we have a retarded prime minister and an extremely expensive real estate market but at least we don’t live in a place where there are constant terrorist threats and a smoggy skyline. We are surrounded by clean air, beautiful nature and lots of opportunities.

I think the Olympics is what every city needs. Beijing made me proud to be Chinese and Vancouver made me proud to be Canadian.

As you all know, I live to eat and I workout so I can eat more. Losing weight, toning up or whatever your goals are, is actually really easy but the hardest part is finding motivation (and keeping it). Having the right mindset is the most important so you have to have enough drive to reach your goals even though there will always bumps along the road that’ll make you wander off. Here are some tips that helped me:

Don’t say “I want to lose weight.” Dieting is intimidating so don’t make it your main goal. Instead, focus on achieving a healthy lifestyle and once you do, you’re going to lose weight and tone up anyway.

Start a food journal. Weightloss is so simple: eat in a calorie deficit and by recording your food, you’ll see how many calories you’ve eaten and freak out when the numbers get too high which should be some motivation for you to stop [for the day]. Just don’t get too anal and obsessed with the calorie-counting and measuring food; it helps in the beginning but you can stop (or do it less frequently) once you understand your body and your foods overtime.

Start slow and don’t deprive yourself. Don’t cut everything out at once or you’ll end up binging. If you’re craving for something, let yourself have it once in a while in the beginning but only a little bit (eg. a bite) and then slowly restrict yourself even more. Once you start eating healthy and less junk, your cravings will become less and less because basically, if you’re always eating sugary desserts, your body will always crave for it so once you cut it out, you’ll crave it less.

Invest in cute workout gear that compliments your body. You can’t see your body with baggy t-shirts and your boyfriend’s gym shorts but with form fitting clothes (that aren’t 2 sizes too small), you’ll see your body and the progress you’ve made = motivation will go up! FYI, I think Lululemon and Bebe Sports/PH8 sweat pants are the best.

Load up your iPod. Music, workout videos (you can download from Youtube), fitness apps, take notes, etc. Technolgy is so good to us so take advantage of it; you’ll have everything you need right at your fingertips. There are 3 things I always need: iPod, water bottle and a towel. If I forget one of those, I’ll actually drive 20 minutes back home and to the gym again just to get it. I know that sounds stupid but back in high school if I forgot one of those, I would just not work out… which is even stupider. I’m getting there, okay.

Read health and fitness blogs and know the science of toning up/losing weight/etc. Knowing how it works will make it much easier instead of just jumping into it and not see results and besides, it’s actually quite simple once you know how it’s done.

Throw out the scale!! You really only need a mirror and your clothes but if you really need to, only weigh yourself once every two weeks. You’ll get discouraged weighing yourself daily and only seeing minuscule changes in progress.

Be creative. Change your workout weekly/bi-weekly, do different kinds of cardio (machine, bodyweight, circuits, etc.), learn new ways to lift, take classes… the possibilities are endless and you’ll never get bored.

How do you guys stay motivated?

Anyway, if you guys want the link to my fitness journal, shoot me an email (don’t ask for it in the comments!!) but I’d have to have a way to validate your identity (eg. a blog/social media profile — where I’ll email the link back to an email address I find on there).

Ideas that popped into our head (both winter and summer activities):

Bowling (which somehow evolved into drunk-bowling, so scratch that)

Skating (except it gets boring after 5 minutes unless you go drunk-skating)

Snowboarding (except Vancouver hasn’t been getting any snow)

Cross-Country Skiing (benefits the girls who doesn’t snowboard except not everyone has snow gear)

Camping (except we won’t be able to avoid drinking and some of the girls don’t want be be using dirty public washrooms… I’d rather go in the bush with a leaf too)

Movie Night (since we haven’t done this in a while)

Dinners (except we do this a lot already)

Kayaking (except last time N & I had such a miserable time when we were too cold, wet and tired to fight the strong current and our BFs and the guide ditched us because we were too slow)

Biking at the Stanley Park Sea Wall (except for the tandem + shoelace + crashing into a wall incident last summer)

**Hiking (take advantage of all the trails BC has to offer)

Knowing us, we’ll probably end up at a club.

What are some things you like to do with your friends… that doesn’t involve drinking/partying?

Just thought I’d do a quick review of the Blackberry Javelin 8900 since I just switched the the 9700. I’ve been using this phone for about 7 months, upgrading from the 8320 which was a huge difference.

Yes, there was a boyband on my home screen.

Pros:

Nice and upgraded interface.

Small, compact and light; it’s the perfect size.

Has Wifi and GPS.

Vivid display and sharp sound.

Cons:

Not as fast since it’s on a 2G network.

Keyboard isn’t as good as the one on the 8320 (which is still the best Blackberry keyboard to date).

Camera still isn’t anything to rave about but it’s a HUGE improvement from the 8320. I don’t use it for anything other than Twitpics anyway so it doesn’t matter much to me.

Rating: 8/10

I think the 8900 was a great phone although it would’ve been a lot better if it had 3G.

Anyway, I finally switched the the 9700 after it’s been sitting in it’s box in Boyfriend’s closet for the past two weeks and I love it! I’ll do a review after I’ve used it for a couple weeks. I also switched over to Rogers after being on Fido for over 10 years just to save about $15/month on my plan. My new plan is exactly $53/month after taxes with: 500GB of data, 100 daytime minutes, unlimited local and network calling and evenings/weekends, caller display/voicemail/etc. It’s almost the exact same plan I had on Fido excluding unlimited text messaging which I was paying $65-$72/month for but after all my friends got Blackberries, no one text messages anymore. Edit– nevermind I just realized I do get unlimited texting.

Now the question is how I’m going to pimp out my new Bold?! I was about to order another full-white casing for it because I refuse to have the black one just like everyone else but I had second thoughts because I had a white Blackberry for the past 8 months. Should I go for another color? Hrm.

Which Blackberry model are you using and how much are you paying monthly?

Anonymous blogging. I don’t blog about my personal life as much as I use to but I’ve jumped back into [?] and it’s going to be fun. Do you think I don’t write enough “personal” entries on 24C? (&ZOMG, I spelt anonymous right on the first try!!).

HK Style restaurants. I love going to Hong Kong styled cafe and restaurants. Hearty, MSG-filled Chinese comfort food in a relaxing environment where you can be as loud as you want is the best! My favorite is currently “Kings Park” in Richmond on Westminster Hwy (except their Lemon Tea sucks ass). It’s also near Tsim Chai Noodle House and Banzai Sushi… two of my favorites in Richmond.

Off topic, but when my grandpa was dying in the hospital he kept requesting two things: [the best] wonton noodles from Tsim Chai Noodle House and KFC. I’d walk to Richmond Centre to get KFC for him then sit sadly in the corner watching him eat because I always forget to buy some for myself… so my grandma would feel bad and give me a piece (grandpa’s eyesight was really bad by then). When I’m dying, I’m going to request the same plus loads of poutine.

T&T. The best supermarket in the world!!!!!!!!!!!! That’s an understatement.

Pointless games. Like all the ones from Last Day of Work. So mindless, time consuming but so addicting! I guess 95% of games are pointless and are a waste of time though when you can be doing something better… like watching Korean dramas.

Spending hours at the gym. Most of the time I go in, do my thing and then go home; no lingering, socializing, slacking… like it should be. Once a week (usually on a weekend), I like that I get to take my time working out and not having to worry about rushing to things afterwards (which almost always fails as I frantically rush out of the gym because I forgot about something).

Grape Juice. My dad just bought some because I think he’s going through a grape juice phase too and I just drank out of the carton. Shhh don’t tell. I swear I’ll down the rest tomorrow.

Jersey Shore. This is the most pointless, trashiest show ever with the ugliest and nastiest guys and girls. It’s kinda like watching Tila Tequila’s drama unfold over Twitter… their pathetic lives are our entertainment. Now all I need is some popcorn.

Why does all of Beyonce’s songs makes you want to kill yourself after hearing it for the 3rd time!? I realized this 4 years ago but still have her songs on my playlist; her songs must’ve turned me insane. She has an amazing voice and her songs are good RIGHT when it comes out but afterwards they get annoying as frick!

Ladies, there is a time to stop wearing bandage dresses or just skimpy dresses in general. Just because you’re wearing one in a club, doesn’t mean you look hot. It’s nice to have confidence but no one really wants to see flabs, rolls, guts and cellulite, amongst other things. Please. Spare. Us.

I have a fear of public washrooms. I always head to the biggest/handicap stall if I need to (nothing worse than being in a tiny, smelly stall… especially with all those Asian restaurants I go to) and find myself always holding my breath when I walk in one. Thankfully, I’ve mastered the art of holding my bladder for long periods of time even though it will certainly mess me up in the future.

I also find myself holding my breath when I walk into Langara for my night classes. Call me a snob but old buildings makes me feel dirty and I never had to be in one for long periods of time ever since elementary school.

I don’t understand why nobody can pronounce my name the first time they see it written down. The either think it’s a typo and add an “h” for “Kathy” or call me “Cat-ty.”

Pineapples + flaxseeds = accidently-delicious-salad-bar-combination. Nomnomnom.

People ask me why I say I love the rain and gloomy weather so much… it’s because I never have to go out when it’s raining! I actually hate being IN the rain, but I can go a whole week of typical Vancouver weather without stepping outside if I wanted to (most places I go to have underground parking, don’t have to take public transit, etc.)

I can’t sleep with the heat turned on even though I always regret it in the morning. Another reason why I don’t like summer: my body is sooo sensitive to heat.

Sometimes at work, I’d feel really self-conscious because I’m wearing accessories that makes lot of noise when I walk around and I feel like I’m annoying everyone so I tell myself not to wear it again. Yet I’m wearing another one the next day… and the next.

Another HUGE pet-peeve: people who don’t organize their PSDs!!!!! *#$%&$#@!!! They should offer a mandatory class in art school: “PSD Organization 101” please and thank you.

I hate using laptops because I need to look through at least a 22″ monitor (or smaller, dual monitors) or else I won’t take going on the computer seriously and won’t get any work done. If I had to use a tiny monitor, I’d probably stare at Tweetdeck the whole time, waiting for new tweets to appear. Luckily, we only connect our laptop to the TV to watch movies.

Make up companies needs to stop making those useless brushes that comes with eye shadows palettes, concealers, etc. Who uses them?

Boyfriend and I finally started watching Heroes and I can’t stand fat-doughnut-cop!! Does he die yet, next season? (Don’t answer that!!)

The generic brand of Peptol Bismol works sooo much better than the real thing.

Boyfriend *talking shit about me: “…and all those books she looks at.”
Me: “Um. It’s called READING.”

Nothing new have been added to the list in ages until now … dundundun … AVATAR!! I’m sure everyone is sick of hearing more news about the movie but I had to add in my two cents. There was nothing spectacular about the plot and it had the most annoying and dumb protagonist ever (I almost wanted to stop watching) but the visuals, action scenes and the epic-ness of it all were amazing. By visuals, I don’t mean the quality of the CGI but the Pandora in itself. It’s nothing new (if you read a lot of fantasy like me) but you rarely get to see it in a film presented in the way that it was. I’m looking forward to the sequels and more importantly, the book. *crosses fingers*

Body Rock – This is my favorite site for work out videos (why spend hundreds of dollars on DVDs?). Zuzana’s work out videos are KILLER, short, effective and leaves me crippled the next day which I love. She’s also proof that you don’t need to go to a gym to get a fit and lean body.

Fitness Spotlight -This is just an overall awesome blog full of tips, facts and challenges. I spent like 5+ hours going through their archives when I first stumbled on it.

Cranky Fitness – Another one of my absolute favorites and is written by women. I love fitness blogs written by women because it’s easier to relate to and less entries on how to get big and bulky muscles.

James Kerrison – Not updated as often as I like but the articles published are absolute gems.

Mark’s Daily Apple – Has very informative articles that are obviously very throughly researched, with lots of statistics and facts. If you really want to get educated, hit up this blog!

Fit Bottom Girls – Fun and lighthearted fitness blog for women (and men) written by women. Has a too many seemingly sponsored posts for my liking but the rest of the articles are worth the read.

That we’ve never been to Mars… or any other planet. As I kid, I use to indulge in astrology books (the one with lots of pictures) because I was obsessed with the universe. There were lots of “theory” books about missions to other planets and I always thought they were real… you wouldn’t be able to imagine my disappointment when I learned that we’ve never done it. Any of it. The moon doesn’t count because it’s lame.

Does anyone remember this super old show on the Family Channel (like back in the late 90’s) with these kids who had a time machine. The machine was like big round thing with pillars around it and a control station in the middle or something and they’d travel through time, meet famous people and shit happens to them where they always frantically run back to their time machine to get home. I don’t remember many of the episodes except this one where they went back to palace in 17th century France or something and everyone had white wigs, big hair (very Marie Antoinette-ish).

All I found was this question on Yahoo Answers which is talking about the same show but never answered. Ah.

I’m trying to remember the name of this show and it’s killing me!! HELP!!

People are asking me how to make their own photoalbum like CAPTURED. The reason I started the album was because I wanted a way to look through my pictures easily (and I hated scrolling through them on my computer) so with the aid of too much time on my hands, I used a graphics program, batched all my pictures so they were the same size, wrote some simple HTML (with iFrames…this was back in 2002 okay) and hosted my images locally. Eventually I uploaded it to my server so my friends could see it and now it’s where it’s at today.

It took me months but I finally revamped CAPTURED !! I imported everything into Wordpress’ NextGen Gallery Plugin MANUALLY (200+ galleries, 6000+ images). I’ve been meaning to do this since March and it’s finally done. I hope I never have to do it again so if you’re going to start now, start with a solid platform you think you’ll stick to.

Why I’d rather have my own gallery rather than use another web service/upload on Facebook/etc:

Total control over my gallery and make it look and function how I want it (I’m sooo anal and FB just doesn’t cut it for me).

Don’t have to deal with uploading problems (culprit: Facebook!!).

I know it’ll be around forever (…or as long as I keep my web server).

8 years of of EMBARRASSING pictures = great memories!! It’s also interesting to see how we grew up and things we did in chronological order.

Advantages of NextGen Gallery Plugin for Wordpress:

Will generate thumbnails and custom original image sizes for you so you don’t need another program to resize them.

Easy to create multiple albums, galleries and integrating them into blog posts/pages.

Images can be displayed how you want it (thumbnails, slideshow, etc).

My album use to be public but I recently made it private because I was uncomfortable with certain people I know creeping my sites looking at my pictures. With WP, you can control who looks at them.

Tips:

Use any CMS you want. I chose Wordpress because I was familiar with it.

Remember to do regular database back-ups just in case anything happens.

Keep your galleries organized in separate folders on your computer.

Gone are the reds, the platinum blonds… my girlfriends and I are finally growing up. Temporarily.

It was also the beginning of the end of my blog when I rediscovered K-Pop which took over my life.

I’ve also been working on a soccer development team the past year at work and I’ve learnt SOME things about it. My interest in it hasn’t gone up (again, to Boyfriend’s dismay) but I do love watching funny soccer videos on Youtube. I also try to call it football now because one of the producers is so insistent on it (he’s obviously European).

Anyway, here are the 2009 blog highlights (check out 2008):

2009 was an okay blogging year for me because I had MANY blocks and distractions even with 50+ drafts sitting on my dashboard. Frankly, 2008 was 10x better but hopefully I’ll do better next year.

99. The Wonder Girls – Being a huge K-Pop fan, I tripped when I saw the Wonder Girls on the list. If I were 12 years old, I’d be totally all over those girls… although, I only have room for Korean boyband-teenybopper’ing at my ripe age of 22 right now.

74. Recycling Gray Water – Water is probably going to cost more than gas in the future.

65. Obesogens – “chemical compounds in the environment—notably from plastics—that can turn developing cells into fat cells. These stay with a child for life, making weight loss difficult.” Doesn’t that just scare you? We’re creating such a harmful and dangerous world for our children.

55. Lost Series Finale – Reminds me that I’ve gotta start a countdown until the season ends so I can officially begin my couch-potatoe-ing. Yay!

6. Augmented Reality – “…the superimposing of digital information over physical reality, will make its way into the hands of mass audiences. AR smartphone apps can show where subway entrances are located, reveal prices of nearby homes or label landmarks for tourists. Marketers are getting in on the act, including GE and HP, whose AR game Roku’s Reward has players chase virtual images layered over reality on a phone’s screen.”

5. Asia’s Widening Income Gap – This just makes me sad. Forgot what we were talking about this morning, but boyfriend said: “Guess what makes them rich?! The poor people!!” So true.

Sony, for instance, predicts that 3D sets will compose 30 to 50 percent of all the TVs it sells in its 2012 fiscal year. [source]

1. 3D at Home – Boyfriend and I were talking about this earlier this year and how cool would that be? They’re going to be super expensive when they first come out but prices will probably drop like crazy after the 5 or so years when they start producing something cooler like TV that emits smells… WHEN YOU WANT IT TO (Food Channel.. mmmm).

Here is the complete list of 100 Things to Watch in 2010.
