The Curse of CTRL+S

I have an obsessive-compulsive disorder of constantly pressing CTRL+S every 10 seconds or in the case of WordPress, “Save and Continute Editing” (although I’ve lost count of the times I actually press CTRL+S instead of the proper button). If you ever come to my page while I’m editing one of my entries and you see a partially finished sentence, refresh in a couple seconds and maybe the sentence will be completed. Refresh again and I bet you will find more unfinished sentences and misspelled words. My WordPress admin panel is extremely slow probably due to the excessive plug-ins I have installed so it might take a while. It’s annoying but it’s so hard trying to kick this damn habit.

Totally off topic, but why does “WordPress” appear as a typo in the WordPress post editor?! Oh and I know WP automatically saves your post as you type, but you can’t entirely trust automated scripts.

Anyway…

Sometimes when I’m working on a HUGE poster in Photoshop or Illustrator, I find myself “accidentally” pressing CTRL+S which results in me having to wait 10-20 minutes for the document to save because the file is so big. I’m scared to cancel it too because I did that once and the whole thing crashed (and I lost the file). This is what you call unnecessary waste of life.

This is even more pathetic: I find myself pressing CTRL+S after I finish typing something in the browser (eg. commenting on someone’s blog or sending private messages online) and then the annoying “save as” pop ups in Firefox. Then I have to close it. My fingers are lazy.

The root of the problem is no doubt from being a graphic designer. How many times have you designed something and your computer crashes AND YOU DIDN’T SAVE!!! And then you wanna kick yourself for being a idiot and later you realized you wasted your time kicking yourself and sulking because the work you did is gone FOREVER!! Solution? CTRL+S every 10 seconds… or in some cases, after each action. For example, pixel-pushing in Photoshop (even when it’s only one pixel).

But on the other hand, my co-worker told me that he actually has to click on file > save as (I did say “save as” and not “save“) each time to make sure his file is saved 100%. Oh god, let’s hope I don’t start doing that.

Anyway, I’m sure you’re all sick of seeing a bolded and capitalized CTRL+S every 10 seconds. I’ll stop CTRL+Sing now.
