I’m getting anxious at the thought of going away for 5 weeks. Diet won’t be a problem because I don’t plan to (and never will), motivation won’t be either BUT I don’t know how my exercise regiment will be like; how much time we’ll have, how tired we’ll be, how big our accommodation is (outdoors is out of the question because I’m not going to suffer in that heat). I also plan to pig out like I’ve never pigged out before so I need to figure something out! Exercising is a must though. And no, the tons of walking we’ll probably do is not enough.
DIET: You just cannot go to Asia and diet… I’d rather stay home!! I’m glad no one I’m going with are food nazis though, I hate going out with people who don’t eat.
Our plan:
- We’re bringing skipping ropes, resistant bands and a timer.
- Short and effective workouts. Lots of Tabata, timed circuits, 600 rep workouts, etc.
- Will do tons of bodyweight exercises:Â Burpees, Lunges, Squats, Lateral Slides, Dips, Push Ups, Planks, Pikes, etc.
- Bringing the laptop of course which we copied P90X into.
- Might check into the Mariott (with a gym) for a week in HK even though we are staying with family the rest of the time. It’s not just for the gym though… I don’t want to feel like an intruder and stay with someone for so long even if it’s family —and we can get a good discount anyway.
- Exercise at least 4 times per week, most likely in the mornings.
I also found out my cousin is a yoga instructor and has a studio so maybe I can milk the benefits. Hyukhyuk. I don’t do yoga though but I will make use of the space.
BFF and I are both pretty active so it’s good that we can probably motivate each other. Boyfriend on the otherhand IS very fit but since we’re on vacation, he’ll probably be in the corner munching on deep-fried frog legs while we’re working out. Damn guys with naturally high metabolism!!
Airplane snack ideas. Are some of these even allowed? I left out the obvious like nuts, carrot sticks and trail mix but I can’t stand those.
- Plain instant oatmeal in Tupperware (can get hot water on plane).
- Homemade Banana bread with slightly under-ripped bananas (for it’s resistant starches).
- Dried mango (yes, not the healthiest but I lurve my dried mango) + cranberries.
- Dark Chocolate! Mmm.
- String Cheese
- Hardboiled eggs
- Homemade oatmeal cookies
Eating plan: eat everything but in moderation, of course. Well, maybe a little more than moderation… I can do that at home.
How do you stay active while on vacation?

enjoy your trip babe! you’re gonna have a great time. Everytime I visit Asia I end up eating so much.

Go Katy!!! So motivated to be active on vacation! I think you will be fine while on vacation even with all the amazing eating, walking, AND extra exercise. Try not to get sick while on the plane since if you do get sick, it might a little uncomfortable to exercuse like always.
How do I keep fit while on vacation…hmmm. haha. If it’s a winter vacation like snowboarding – no problem! If it’s anything near a beach, pool, or lake – swimming keeps me in shape as well as wakeboarding. Last year, I went wakeboarding and omg! my legs and arms were sore stiff! I generally never “do nothing” and eat while on vacation. My vacations are a big mix of going out and about, doing fun/exciting things, and eating the best like you!

I exercise when I’m sick anyway… it’s the best [temporary] relief. If you still have the energy for it, I think intense cardio while you got the sniffles makes all the symptoms go away and stay away for a couple hours afterwards. The only thing is that I have to go during off hours when there isn’t anyone at the gym just in case I’m contagious.
I definitely want to try surfing and stuff too! And yay for snowboarding… it burns sooo much calories which is one of the reasons why I started. LOL.

oooH lets join in July! yah i’m going back to work right when i get home lols.

I usually end up needing a vacation from my vacations! Now that I think of it, I always end up limping on the last day because of how fast of a pace we go on these vacations –walking/ running/ hiking/ exploring all day then repeating the next day & the next until it’s time to go home… Maybe you’ll be doing so much sight seeing that you won’t have to worry about fitness too much.

Hopefully. I have a feeling I’ll be way to tired to do anything but the thought of it scares me!!

AHH I’m terrible at working out “seriously”, but I’ve tried P90X and it burns like hell the next day! And it makes me want to cry when they tell me to do jump lunges/squats… I like to run outside or lift lightweights but it’s never for a long period of time.. I’m jealous of your ability to keep up an amazing workout routine!
Have fun in Asia, you’ll eat a lot of unhealthy stuff but you’ll also eat food thats really good for you (what asian people have in their diets haha) so don’t stress and eat as much yummy food as possible

Thanks! Yes, I plan to eat things because they’re yummy, not healthy.
The love the pain you feel the next day after a good workout… it’s soo satisfying.

Those plane snacks all sound awesome EXCEPT for the hardboiled egg. I think if I was on a plane (small enclosed space) and someone whipped out an egg to eat, I’d want to kill them. The whole plane would smell like fart hahah

Have a great trip Katy
Wow your so prepared.
I actually lost weight last time I went to asia without exercising.
The weather was so boiling hot. I was constantly sweating buckets and reaching for my water bottle instead of my food!
PS. Thankyou so much for the tips lady! When I lift heavy weights, should I do less reps?

I’m hoping that the heat would sweat off all the excess fat I’m going to gain there.
Is that why Asians are so skinny?! LOL

Whoo-wee … love the goals you’ve set out for yourself, I’m bookmarking this post in case I do end up going to Europe to see family, it seems like they’re never content unless you’ve shovelled down at least three plates’ worth of food, eh?
Love the idea with the skipping ropes – it’s so lightweight and won’t take up any room luggage-wise. Really hope you get to eat tons but then exercise so you don’t feel too too horrible afterwards!

Yeah… I think skipping is a better cardio workout than any machine except it’s hard to do it for long and a little boring. Otherwise I’d do it all the time.

Awesome plan!! I am actually going to start a separate blog about fitness (per our comment conversation about how my blog has turned into mostly fitness). Shoot me an email if its something you’d like to work with me on! I already bought an awesome domain name and started designing!

Great post! I plan to go to Vietnam this summer, but I also need to train for my half marathon (which is a huge goal for me). I know I will be eating like crazy, but I’m hoping to be really active and go out to see the sights. If all else fails, I’m sure they’ll have a gym in Vietnam.

WOW AWEOSME! 5-week vacation? Wow!! Where are you going dear? Some places in Asia are REALLY hot like us so bring lotsa spaghetti strapped clothing, SHORTS. But on the otherhand, if you’re going to Korea or Japan, DO THE OPPOSITE. Hella cold there! Mostly southeast asian countries are really HOT RIGHT NOW *my brother went to Malaysia last last week, SO HOT* It rained a bit here in the Philippines since my last post so it kinda cooled down but it’s still 34 degrees up. At night it gets cooler. If ever you go here, go to Tagaytay City where it’s colder. It’ll be cool if you reply back if you’re going here!
Good luck with fitness plan while on vacation! Man I’ll be too lazy and just walk and walk for exercise XD But i like the jump rope part! I LOVE YOGA! I need to go back already but nO TIME. Darn school!

HK, Thailand, somewhere in China, Korea and maybe Taiwan. Yeahh I’m sooo not looking forward to the heat since I despise heat soo much but I’ll need to suck it up. I have a feeling I’m going to be complaining the whole way but then on the other hand, maybe I’ll sweat the calories off.
Isn’t it hot in Korea and Japan in June too?

h you’re leaving in June? Oh dear… it is a bit hotter now in all those countries… But am not sure how hot though, now it’s still relatively cool but it might get hotter. Good luck! Hot weather doesn’t necessarily mean you get to burn more calories, I don’t know… in my brother’s experience when he went to Portugal for 4 months, he got thinner there than here since it’s colder and your body needs to work twice more to burn heat and to keep you warm. Here your body doesn’t need to keep you warm at all.
INSANELY hot today. Sun was burning my skin GRAR!! I need umbrella T_T I hope it’ll be not hotter in June huhu… thailand is somewhat like the Phils. HK, China, Korea and Taiwan are cooler but just not sure how. Will tell you the situation here so that you’ll know the pattern with Thailand. Don’t worry, it’ll still be fun! Just… bRING LOTS OF FAN + SUNBLOCK!
Am not good with heat either T_T Can’t wait to go to France in August!

I remember going to Japan last year and eating MSG-filled noodles everyday! I also had a couple of crepes too. =) I never exercise on vacation, but the crazy amount of walking done in Japan was enough exercise for me!
Have fun on your five week trip and good luck with your fitness plan!

Phew, I’m tired just reading about your plan to stay fit while on vacation! It makes me glad I’m not that fit to begin with–it makes falling off the wagon not such a big deal.
REPLY
Its reall y hard to stay fit during a vacation because of all of the food, and good luck and I love how you are staying positive and motivated through it. What I found out was that using public transportation, such as the subway helped me move aroubd rather than taking a taxi, along with visiting a lot of sites and walking around. Hope you have fun and I love reading your blog.

ohhhhh lordy. . .stay strong and do not give into temptation while away in asia because you will seriously eat everything in your way! . . .well thats what happened to me. haha
my thing now is when i go traveling, i basically live off vitimin enhanced drinks. I get really dehydrated so I basically lived off vitimin water or powerades. . .it worked for me i guess?

Oh lord. My girlfriend’s boyfriend knows how out of shape I am and he bet that I could not last the warm up of one of the P90X workouts he has. Yeah, the warm up!!! Okay so my girlfriend and I did the warm up plus 5 minutes of a workout so it was like oh, 15 minutes altogether. The both of us were bitching about being in pain for 2-3 days after. Yep. So I’m not good to ask advice from for workouts LOL. Uh, but the last time I was in Malaysia and I ate A LOT…every relative we met was like, “oh did you eat yet? Lets eat” so I was always stuffed and I lost weight because the weather is so hot I just sweat it all out somehow.
When are you leaving to Asia?! Hope you have an awesome trip Katy
