A couple of years ago, 5-year-olds use to ask me for my MSN. Sometimes when I go on the computer, I’d see the kids’ MSN Messenger opened with like 5 other kids of the same age on their friends list messaging each other. One day, I went on the laptop only to find Firefox opened with multiple tabs, left opened by a little 5-year-old boy trying to get on Youtube except he couldn’t spell it and each tab was “yutbeu.com“, “utoobe.com” etc. I don’t think he ended up finding the correct site.

Boyfriend would tell me of this 6-year-old nephew calling his friends for “tech advice” for their Nintendo DS. “You have to take it out and blow into it and then put it back in!!!” (when the games won’t start) or “I’m on Wifi right now… go on so we can battle!!”

The other day, Boyfriend’s 8-year-old niece came up to us and asked us for an IPHONE for Christmas. I was like WTFBBQ… what do you need a cellphone for?!! She quickly corrected herself and said iPod Touch instead but I still wonder. Heh. And she’s probably going to get that iPod for Christmas too. Lucky kids!! *enters jealous glare here* I never even got Christmas presents as a kid. Our tree had empty boxes wrapped up because my parents never believed in giving presents and the tree was just for “decoration.”

Comment

Totally not her mom.

Anyway, this entry was inspired by a comment left on my Facebook photo by an 8-year-old niece (using her mom’s account). Why was she on Facebook? I have no idea. I wouldn’t let my kids on social community websites until they are out of elementary school but at least Facebook isn’t as shady as Myspace.

Oh and yesterday, I saw a little 6-year-old GOOGLING!!!! OMG. He was actually searching for stuff on Google. I’m. So. Amazed. And proud.

Technology is connecting kids to the world by giving them access to so much information, allowing them to grow up faster BUT is that good or bad?

    It’s BAD! BAD BAD BAD!!

Kids need to slow down and watch cartoons like I did growing up and even if they did, they wouldn’t find all the good cartoons the way we had it. I never got techy stuff as gifts as a kid either. I got barbies and play-doh and even with that I was the happiest kid on the block.

I didn’t get a cellphone until I was in 7th grade! I could actually say stuff like remember back then when we watched cartoons, played outside, played with these toys, blah blah blah and actually miss those things. I can’t imagine kids today growing up saying oh remember when we were younger, we had cellphones, computers, ipods, etc. because none of those things are going anywhere! We’re already living in a hi-tech society and it’s only gonna get more hi-tech from here.

Hahah ok that was pretty long. I was only ranting because me and the bf were just talking about this not too long ago either. So this is just a continuation of that. LOL. :)

I think that we will know if it’s good or bad in several years, when those kids will have grown up ! But personnaly, i think that it’s not a good idea to allow elementary school kids to use the internet alone…some things are really sick !

It’s kind of scary too actually… man! When you compare them now to our generation… whoa the difference! That’s why when I have kids, I’m gonna have a summer house and that’s where I’ll raise them, away from technology for a while :D

I completely agree with Tina Marie! Children need to go back outside and play with the other neighborhood kids and play with their toys… you know the toys that are real and not digital?

I had a rough childhood, but the good memories I DO have is being outside barefoot for HOURS, playing with other kids – hide and seek, manhunt, dodgeball, water balloon fights, and other fun games. I rarely watched TV and I was very healthy and active. I played sports and was the happiest kid. I wish I could have the same for my children, but I’d be stupid to believe that.

Technology opens doors to obesity, bad health, and an overall bad attitude for children (I’m not saying ALL, but some, yes). I found the internet, TV, and all that other interested stuff at the RIGHT age, so therefore, I knew not to become heavily addicted to it. Children these days, however, have become so involved with technology, they don’t know a life outside of it and that won’t end very well :(

i kind of feel like even though the internet lets us communicate in unbelievable speeds across amazing distances.. it doesn’t really make communicating any better. you lose something from not being face-to-face.

and 6 year olds using google… guess that’s something impressive to put on his resume when he’s older :P the internet has almost the same effects as television, it has pros and cons.

    outside > internet.

Not sure if its good or bad, but it sure is inevitable. I remember a blog I used to frequent and her 3 or 4 y/o niece was using the computer already. It was crazy, made me want a little person to teach the internet to.

I think it’s mostly detrimental because for kids these days, playing with technology is replacing playing outside and being active, and it’s also eliminating human interaction and hurting their interpersonal skills. In my opinion, what kids need isn’t to grow up any faster (they have plenty of time to grow up!) or to have access to more information through technology (what happened to old-fashioned learning from other people?) — what they need is to play outside with other kids and have fun as kids.

i find it kind of weird seeing little kids using mobile phones, internet and talking tech. what happened to playing outside in the sunshine?
i find it scary how fast they are growing nowadays. a little kid i tutor who is 10 was using the word noob and LOL in sentences and i don’t think he really knew what they meant, it’s just everyone says them at school.

  9. I am too, amazed by the fact what the little kids get and can do these days. Don’t you feel super old then?

my cousin has a mobile phone, she got her first one at 11? 10? I don’t know, it’s ridiculous. And the rest of my cousins are actually on the dutch version of FB, called hyves… CRAZY!

My little brothers (8 & 10) both want cell phones and ipods this year!
I’m sorry kiddos, but I didn’t get a cell phone til I was EIGHTEEN.
What the hell do they need cell phones for anyway??
When I was taking them to school one day I saw a little girl no older than six talking on her cell, so I thought it was her mom’s, but then I saw her mom on a cell phone too!
I think I’ll stick to face to face interaction with the little ones for now, thanks!

On the other hand, I find it beyond amazing that they’re little geniuses when it comes to using the computer. :D

I think there are pros & cons to kids having access to all this technology today. Although, it is a bit scary to think what they may actually have access to out there in the big, wide world known as cyberspace.
Oh, and I feel you girl about the whole height thing, lol. I used to feel so awkward about my height that I rarely ever wore heels but now I’m not so bad and don’t really care what people think when I’m in heels and looking like this giant asian chick, hehe. =)

it’s nuts, i know! i’m still shocked by kids these days. sometimes i think oh hell no these kids need to stay kids. too much techno is bad for the brain but then i think maybe that’s my inner child showing a wee bit of jealousy for not having all these same cool gadgets when i was younger.

Yup, it’s insane and cringe whenever kids are asking for things they see in the media.

My cousin (he’s in grade 8) has a iPhone touch, PSP, PS3 and cellphone…this Christmas he’s getting a laptop. Parents are overindulging their kids with technology and there seems to be no form of control over what they can grasp.

Computer is such a norm these days I wouldn’t be surprised if they started introducing computer classes in grade 1 in the near future!

I’m just going to here and continue shaking my head. I feel so old like there’s already a generation gap!

Technology has definitely come a long way and is very good for the kids in some ways but I think it’s dangerous because of all of those internet pedophiles/predators. Not to mention, there’s some really weird stuff online that kids can come in contact with that they shouldn’t. My son is almost 5 and I don’t let him near any computers because he’s simply too young for it. I also know that in a lot of schools they supply some classes with apple laptops to assist in their lessons. It’s amazing but scary at the same time because there are things that our computers are used for that are not always good.

I think it’s bad that they can get info so easily! Can’t control what’s out there so parents need to be extra careful nowadays! When I was growing up, I played with dolls, not PS3s….sigh.

yeah I had a hard time compiling a wish list too. it’s weird, maybe as we get older, we’re “wiser” so we realize that we don’t need as much stuff as we think we do, ha!

thanks for all your comments on my blog, I really appreciate it! this “create outfits from your current wardrobe” deal is tough!

Kids should be kids! Enough said.

And to reply to your comment on my blog: I’ve started reading the first book, but I’m getting lazy so, I haven’t picked it up in a while (which I should). Haha! There’s just something about Orlando Bloom with beautiful hair and those lovely purple elf eyes. I really want to hang shelves on my wall for my books, but I keep thinking that if an earthquake every comes, I’ll be killed by the falling books. *sigh* I don’t have space for another bookshelf. =*(

Putting good and bad aside, I think it’s simply unavoidable. I’m sure my parents felt weird about me using a calculator at school when they had to scratch the number out. It’s just one of those things — it’s a different generation. And once they have kids it’ll all just happen again.
