I don’t wear mascara as much anymore because I haven’t found a mascara that works so I prefer falsies. Last week, I got my hands on a couple tubes of Maybelline’s new Pulse Perfection mascara though.

Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara

Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara is a revolutionary, vibrating mascara that grips and coats your eye lashes using a battery powered Turbo Equilizer wand.

Priced much more affordably then it’s competitions, Maybelline Pulse Perfection Mascara allows you to create the 7 signs of lash perfection – Thicker, Longer, Defined, Intense Colour, Shapely Curve, Healthy Luster, and Perfect Alignment!

It vibrates 7,000 times per stroke and the battery is suppose to last a minimum of 130 applications or just over four months. The concept is sounds good but does it really work? I used my sister’s pictures to test the mascara for this entry …because she has longer lashes than mine. Hyukhyukhyuk.

Things to keep in mind:

  • We’re Chinese so this review is a little biased.
  • Chinese people don’t have eye lashes (well we do but they’re usually short and stick straight, so that basically translates to they don’t exist).
  • *Lashes were curled before mascara was applied.

  • Easy-to-use but fingers get tired after pressing the tiny button for a long time (if you’re one of those people who likes to apply tons of coats).
  • Thickens and lengthens with 3-4 coats.
  • Makes your already-curled lashes go straight again. (-)
  • Vibrating makes mascara prone to CLUMP-AGE even though they say it doesn’t. Keep your lash combs in hand! (-)
  • Can retain similar results to Majolica Majorca with a few more coats and if lashes were curled again. But that’s one extra-step for the uber lazy.
  • Results are good but still prefer Majorca Majolica.

Majorca Majolica
Here are shots with her favorite mascara, Majolica Majorca.

  • Thickens, lengthens, minor clumping and retains curl.
  • Clearly the winner but the problem with this is that it’s hard to get in North America.

I gave some to my girlfriends to try it out too and they had similar comments. The final verdict is that Maybelline Pulse Perfection could be a good mascara— if you don’t suffer from no-lash syndrome like us poor Asians. If you’re Caucasian, Indian, Middle Eastern, etc. etc., who are already blessed with long, thick and curly lashes then this mascara might give you good results and worth trying out since it DOES thicken and lengthen.

Katy Good mascaras are hard to find and it really depends on the person. Would I buy this mascara for $15? Probably not.

I’ve given up my mascara quest years ago so nothing beats plain old Ardell falsies. ♥ Looks exactly like all mascara ads out there (with fake eyelashes on the models and all). BUT on my lazy days when I do wear mascara, I use Lancome L’Extreme (which still isn’t perfect).

Have you tried Maybelline Pulse Perfection? What did you think?

What’s your favorite mascara?

And just for the record, vibrating mascaras are NOT scary! Why do people get all freaked out? It’s not like it’s an epilator or something.

Nice eyes!!! My favorite mascara is Majorca Majolica as well!! I use it with my Smashbox Mascara Primer to make sure it stays on longer. Works like magic.

If you want ‘em just holla. They’re all over in Singapore. :D

I saw this in the drugstore the other day and was debating whether I should get it, but the price was a bit of a turn off. Boo to asian lashes :( I have it on one eye and it’s so frustrating when applying mascara.

okay wait, it vibrates? i don’t know if i’m skilled enough for that. hahaha! but you’re so right about asian lashes, mine are exactly how you described them. booo!

    REPLY

Lol actually the vibration is very subtle so it’s not that hard at all!

I also suffer from asian lashes syndrome and have been on a quest for a good working mascara forever. So far nothing too satisfying, even bobbi brown ( although the eyeliner works wonder ).

i actually have “chinese lashes” too and have the same problem with the non-retaining curl thing! the concept of the brush is awesome, but the execution, not so much :|

i curl my eyelashes before applying mascara too. like you, the mascara effects dont really last long and my lashes just flop and go straight again. but they do look thicker and longer… just not curled.

at the moment i’m using lancome hypnose which is a sample version from some lancome promo. hahaha~ sometimes i use my little sister’s max factor 2000calorie aqualash which is thicken than the other one.. but once again .. the curl doesn’t stay.

btw.. did i tell you i tried poutine for the first time a few weeks ago?! but i don’t think it is as heart as the original canadian version because it had mozarella cheese instead of the cheese curds.

    REPLY

Ooh POUTINE!!! Did you like it? I don’t think it’d taste as good with mozarella cheese though so you had a fake poutine. Hahaha. :P

My favorite mascara is the Maybelline’s Great Lash in Very Black Waterproof. This mascara is definitely my favorite. It’s been around for years and years – some people love it, some people hate it, so I think it really depends on your eyelashes. In the past I’ve tried several different kinds with no luck – this one just works perfectly, and I only use like, one coat, mostly around the lashes on the outer edge. I have PENCIL straight eyelashes, but they’re fairly long when I curl them (which I always do when I apply mascara) so I guess I’m not looking for something that makes them longer.

Having said that though, I recently looked up my mascara in the cosmetic database (cosmeticdatabase.org) and found it it rates a 5 – out of 10 – on the hazard score. http://cosmeticdatabase.org/product.php?prod_id=97883 … It’s extremely scary to see that a product that pretty much touches my eyeballs has ingredients linked to allergies, irritation, cancer and various other toxicities. :| … I already use eyeliner that’s free of all of these things, but mascara is one thing I haven’t found a suitable replacement for. :(

I haven’t tried that one yet.. I’m still kind of on that quest to find thee perfect mascara .. I think I’m almost there. Right now I can’t live without Rimmel London’s Glam’Eyes Mascara. One coat is fine, but for max results, I usually put 2-3 coats. Another suggestion. It helps when you curl your lashes after applying mascara. A heated eyelash curler works too, but if you don’t want to spend so much on a fancy eye lash curler, (like me) heating it with a hair dryer or even a lighter (just for a few seconds) works. A LOT. My eye lashes are super short and with this it looks like it have falsies on (sometimes, when I get it right haha). :cheer:

    REPLY

Yep, curling before and after definitely makes it look better but I still can’t stand mascaras that straighten my curl. I use a hair dryer to heat mine up too (no point in buying the heated eye lash curlers) or use a waterproof mascara b/c it holds the curl for longer.

I don’t really see the point of me wearing mascara though.. there’s basically no effect at all. I’d rather wear falsies for the extra drama. :P

I’m white and I’ve still started feeling naked without falsies. I think Asian lashes look better natural than messing with mascara.

I think we got lucky with my daughter, she picked up my lashes rather than her mother’s. And I didn’t know you had a sister. I guess there is no reason that I should have though. Is she older or younger?

I use mascara all the time but I’m addicted to MAC’s pro long lash when I want a dramatic look and CG Lash Blast for every day low-key looks (it’s brown instead of black). I don’t wear falsies but I agree that if I had short lashes I’d rather just have lots of eye drama rather than only a little bit from makeup.

Ugh, I have Chinese eyelash-syndrome too. The BF says they’re like cat-eyelashes. If I curl them and then apply mascara, then it’ll look like I actually *have* eyelashes, but they don’t look long at all. I go sans-makeup most of the time, but when I do wear mascara, I use Mabelline Define-A-Lash mascara. It doesn’t clump and it’s cheap. No use spending all that money when I don’t have long enough eyelashes anyway.

But vibrating mascara? How do you keep your hand accurate on your eyelash while it’s shaking. They should advertise its alternative use as a discreet vibrator for the ladies who like keeping them in their purse.

sounds like such a good alternative to those more expensive ones, i’m kinda sad to hear it doesn’t work very well for asian lashes.
You should try the Imju Fiberwig mascara…it’s my HG =D I also love the MM lash gorgeous wing
if i could, i would use falsies more often, but i find them too difficult to apply.

Last time I checked, Indians are Asians too :-P. If you want a mascara to hold a curl, you need a waterproof one. The Majorlica Majorca you have is in waterproof and that’s why it keeps your lashes curled. Waterproof mascara has more wax in it so it keeps curls better. I just use regular cheap drugstore mascara to keep my lashes looking nice. Pulse Perfection is now in a waterproof version but I hear that it is just as clumpy as the original version.

    REPLY

Yep I know.. I should’ve said East Asian. Yeah I usually use waterproof mascaras to hold the curl too but I hate using waterproof because it’s a pain to take off. If I had nice lashes, I’d use cheap drugstore mascaras too. Lucky you! :P

I have been fortunate enough to be a Vietnamese girl blessed with normal length lashes! I used to load up on mascara, but I don’t wear any eye make-up daily anymore.

I will say that I have found Japanese eyelash curlers to be the best.

Yeah you’re soo lucky! My BF has such long and thick lashes too and all this nieces do too plus they’re curly!! Not fair!! Hahaha.

Thanks for the review! Saves me $80 – I was going to try it but not anymore!
My favourite mascara for daily wear (I don’t wear a lot of coats) is Kiss Me, it’s a tube mascara. For going out, I wear Lancome L’Extreme too! Where can you buy Majolica Majorca? Or Ardell false lashes?

I’ve tried all brands – expensive, cheap, european, american and Japanese brands – you name it!
Yes, I even tried majolica and majorca but it does nothing to my stubborn, straight and short lashes! Apparently not all Japanese mascaras are effective for hardcore lashes. Lashes like mine require every thickening, curling and volumising that I can get to achieve any effects.
The only mascara that works on my lashes to the effect I want is from Canmake’s Glamourous Fur Mascara. It is the ultimate! But it’s hard to come by and I’ve used up one tube. Tried to look for it every where but it’s not been stocked up!! And it’s Japanese.
