The Kind of Reader I Am

Reading: not juz fur innterlectualls. From Pia and Julie’s blog, Book Travellers Inc.

  • When I discover a new author I love, I attempt to read every book they’ve written.
  • I buy all the books I want to read. Money ain’t a thing when it comes to books!! I can spend hundreds of dollars on books and not feel guilty at all whereas if I buy a $7 drugstore lipgloss, I’d drown in my own guilt. Library books makes me feel icky and for some reason, the pages feel gritty and dirty under my fingers— it may have came from all the boogers I found in library books when I was younger. Also, because the last time I checked out library books, I racked up $50 in overdue fines when I forgot to return them (not to mention, I didn’t even read any of them but ended up buying them off Amazon).
  • I’m not a picky reader and I’m not too critical when it comes to books either, which is weird because I usually criticize everything. I usually like most books I read even if the writing wasn’t the best, as long as the plot kept me entertained.
  • I read for entertainment. I prefer books with [lots of] action and something that will keep me sitting at the edge of my seat. I also like historical-fiction and biographies because I love history. I’m not really into slower books and romances, and I think chick-lit is the most annoying genre ever, but I can’t hate it because at least people are reading something, right? I’d still read genres I don’t like if they are there, and there’s nothing else to read though.
  • My favorite place to read is on my bed with two pillows propped up with a cup of tea. I sound like an old woman.
  • I read really fast! It still scares my boyfriend (he’s just jealous).
  • I try to remember to bring a book with me everywhere I go and if someone (a.k.a. Boyfriend’s friends) disses reading, I’ll whip out my book and start reading right there… much to Boyfriend’s dismay.
  • I have to admit, I judge people who say they hate reading. I also look down on people (specifically girls) who boasts that books are a waste of time and only reads magazines. I don’t care if you actually do, but announcing that to the world makes you sound like a complete dumbass. You can say I’m somewhat of a reading-snob but I have no shame in that.
  • I don’t do e-books. I’m love my book collection (although it’s nowhere near as big as I wish it would be).

$500?! O_O I never thought of reading as being an expensive hobby lol. I’ll admit, most of my reading comes from magazines, but I don’t “hate” reading by any means. It’s interesting that most of the books I become engrossed in are actually books I had to read for English class LOL. Obviously my friends thought I was lame for it. Oh well. They’re just missing out. :P

Well one book averages about $10CDN so it adds up. I buy some books secondhand though (eg. >$2 each) so it’s worth it! :P

I actually didn’t like the books I was forced to read in school but enjoyed them when I reread them a couple years later. I think books are more enjoyable when read for entertainment.

I used to say that I only read magazines (it’s written on my deserted myspace page) I didn’t think books would hold my attention, I guess I just didn’t find one that was interesting enough, or I didn’t give it a chance.
Another “habit” I picked up since blogging is reading books, thanks to the book reviews it makes it much easier to find something I like.
And there is something wonderful about a fresh, brand new book from the bookstore. I don’t know what it is, but there’s just, something.

I use to think it was hard finding good books to read too. I find that when I found authors I like, I’ll google to find other books/authors of the same genres, read Amazon reviews and book sites like GoodReads.com.

I never understand it when people say they don’t read – I love reading! And I don’t just mean like Twilight and HP. I’m reading “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time” right now. I can’t read fast though – I always feel this need to thoroughly absorb every word.

    REPLY

I like that books like HP and Twilight got so many people to start reading though (although it would be ridiculous to compare the quality of those two).

    I like this quote:

“Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” - Richard McKenna

i read really fast too and i never feel bad buying books
somehow it doesnt register to me as a cost

whenever i go overseas, its one of my top things to buy

I blame my mom! She lectures me every time I buy something but never when I buy books.. even when a huge box from Amazon arrives at the door. :P She has a huge collection of Chinese books herself!

ohhhh how i love books — books and magazines.
but it’s my plight of being an only child all my life, I always relied on books and magazines to entertain and enlighten.

sadly I don’t have enough room for all my books, they’re turning my bedroom into a full on library.
nice to know a fellow book worm!

    REPLY

I don’t have enough room for my books too.. I only have space in my bedroom for one shelf and it’s double-stacked. I long for the day I move out just so I can turn a room into a library.

Haha, I never spend money on books! Although I do enjoy reading. Like you, I find that I’m not very critical — it doesn’t take much from a book to interest me.

I get like that too when people say they hate reading. What’s so wrong with reading? There are varied books people can try to read anyway.

I love books! Books were the one thing my mom couldn’t say no too when I was little. You can tell a kid that they can’t have a toy, but you can’t say no to a book.
Library books have a “smell”… I hate finding gross stains & stuff it’s kinda gross. If I’m in the library I’ll flip through the book & sniff it to make sure it isn’t yucky. I always have a book in my purse or car.
That’s one reason why me and my boyfriend broke up. He owns a home but has NO BOOKS, just an old book of Redneck jokes in the bathroom, sad….
    XoXo

    REPLY

Haha my boyfriend doesn’t read either but then I don’t mind it because he doesn’t mind me reading all the time. He has no choice but to accept it!

I’d definitely buy my kids books too.. especially when they get older. Maybe not so much kids’ picture books because you won’t look at them when you’re older; those we can go to the library for. :P

I realized that the cost of a bestseller (or not) book equals to two drugstore lipglosses — which led me to (always) opt for the former. I love both but i’d rather invest on books because they don’t expire.

I think it’s super hot how much you read. I like owning books, but I also love the smell of library books. I think most adult ones are booger free! At least I hope. *crosses fingers*

I read crazy fast too, sometimes I even impress myself. It really helped me out in school. Most people who say they read fast don’t comprehend half of what they take in, which is pointless. When I was a kid I didn’t read as much as my kid sister, but I used to make long lists of favorite words just for fun. So that’s nerdy. Also, in bed with a cup of tea and a book sounds phenomenal. I wish the BF read more so we could sit in bed reading together. Heaven!

    REPLY

I use to like the smell of library books but not so much anymore. I think I smelled too many new books once I started making more money to splurge on books. :P I do buy books from secondhand book stores though.

Omg I use to make lists of my favorite words too! Well I made lists about everything when I was younger. What a life!

I don’t like e-Books either. Nor do I care for the Kindle. I love having a book in my hands. I love being able to mark up my book. I love having the words static in front of me, rather than moving up and down and all over a screen to confuse the hell out of me.

    REPLY

I agree! I tried installing a ebook reader on my Blackberry and could never concentrate on it. I didn’t understand the whole Kindle craze either. :S

I don’t read half as much as I want to but I LOVE reading. That’s why I collect books… When I have some free time, I try to work on reading the books in my collection.

But I definitely agree with you on semi-judging people who don’t read (even though I really don’t have the right to do that because recently, I haven’t been reading much either) :P
I’ve never read an e-book. I love smelling the pages of books. They have a certain scent to them.
One more thing: I love buying used books. Every now and then, I find interesting notes on the margins and I just LOVE those. I feel like I’m discussing the book with someone else.

    REPLY

I actually haven’t been reading that much lately because I have no time but if I did, I would do it all day if I can! I can’t wait till summer so I can lie at the beach with a good book.

I need to visit more used bookstores too.. I use to because there was one down the street from my school but not recently because they’re all out of the way! :(

i love reading too. im always reading 3 books at once. If you like historical fiction you might like “The Collection” by Gioia Diliberto it’s set in WWI about a seamstress who goes and pursues her dream in Paris. She ends up working for Coco Chanel. I like it because its a very descriptive book that gives me a sense of what it was like back then. It might be a lil slow tho bcos its not really action packed. In the middle of reading it right now but so far so good.

I’m jealous of your fast reading too! I always try to sit down and read books, but it takes me FOREVER. It took me a whole year to read Memoirs of a Geisha & I actually read it daily. I just get so distracted by my thoughts and end up reading pages like five times.

I think you just need to find books your really interested in. I can never concentrate on a book that I don’t like either!

I have a hard time reading e books. If i read anything online i have to be able to highlight it and it just takes forever. I am generally a slow reader, but faster then some. Once i get into a book i generally love to finish it as soon as i can.

  21. I love to read books too. I like to read a little of everything, except really really really boring history books (they always make me sleepy. hehehehe)

    REPLY

I hated reading history books in school too… they ruin everything! The best way to learn about history is reading historical fiction. I know it’s fiction, but it makes the era more interesting therefore you’ll end up researching the real facts about it by yourself.

I’m not a particularly heavy reader – I read less than 10 books per year because I spend too much time playing around with my camera, but I’m very appreciative when it comes to books. I read them many times over, especially my favourite ones. I chewed on the elegance of words they exude – something that I’m yet to achieve :)

I look down on people who think that reading is uncool – speaks volume of their intellectual ability, haha. Seriously, I think that people who don’t read at all, or who think that reading is just a waste of time, shallow and narrow-minded. They are yet to appreciate the art of reading and slowly digesting and enjoying the aftertaste of words in your mouth (of course, NOT literally, heh).

    Have a great weekend!

Aw, I wish I were less judgemental about books I read like you are. If I’m not at least 75% happy about a book, I’ll stop reading it. The most annoying thing about some books is just the author’s tone. The story may be great, but tone really throws me off.

I’m prejudiced against people who don’t like reading too. I can’t help but feel like they’re stupid or there’s something wrong with them. I used to date a guy who was all, “I don’t read. Ever.” He was pretty boring to talk to, haha.

The only thing I don’t like about reading is that I can’t multi-task while I read. I usually get sucked into a story and just end up spending 4 hours or something with a book. Then I feel guilty because I think of all the other things I could have been doing if I could multitask and read.

Old topic I know, but I wanted to add to the discussion.

I feel the same about spending on books and was brought up to believe that you can never have too many books. I’ve not had a bookshelf for so long so it’s become my one condition for moving in with my boyfriend.

I can’t stand the idea of ebooks replacing paperbacks. There’s too much charm in holding a book, the smell of them, and having a bookshelf to look at that would be lost. In my teens I had a friend who couldn’t stand reading and even though it seemed unimportant I think subconsciously that made us grow apart because it effects other elements of your friendship and personality.
