“I’m lost and confused.” Pt.I

I came across this blog on confusing UI design which inspired me to make a list of things that continues to baffle me.

  1. Asian-Style Chair Lift If there is one thing that’s “impossible,” it’s overcoming the fear of getting-off-chairlifts. Not like the day will ever come but even if I become a pro-boarder, I will ALWAYS be afraid of it. AAALLLWAYSSS.
  2. Football. I will never understand it no matter how hard I try (even though I never tried). Sorry, boyfriend.
  3. Why do people always breath out so loudly right when they walk by you? Couldn’t they do it before they turned the corner or something? That’s hella annoying (and stinky). It sounds like a retarded sigh. :@
  4. Boyfriend is so good at everything he sets his mind to that I don’t even have motivation to kick his ass in anything anymore (eg. he started snowboarding 3 years after me and now he seems to be 50 years ahead of me). Why can’t I be as good as him?! Damn you Boyfriend!! At least I’m better at… Photoshop.
  5. Anything between $7-$24 seems so expensive but I won’t hesitate to buy anything over that price range (eg. $7 drugstore lipgloss vs. $30 department store lipgloss). This is how you DON’T think to save money. Does this ever happen to you or am I just a freak? I guess deep inside, I’m telling myself I’m getting a better value for my money even though I won’t admit to it because I know that just because it’s a department store product, it doesn’t mean it’s better than a drugstore product.
  6. How people drink alcohol like water? It tastes disgusting so I don’t sip on drinks if I don’t have to. Here’s some advice: if you want to make-out with the floor faster, go straight for the hard shots and skip the pussy fruity mixed drinks.
  7. Why can’t I just drag and drop songs onto my iPod?! iTunes need to die.
  8. Boyfriend and I sometimes have conversations where the two of us are talking about two entirely different topics (eg. his latest soccer game vs. the book I’m currently reading); how we understand each other? I have no idea. Sometimes there just isn’t enough time in a day to talk about everything so you need to do it at the same time.
  9. Twilight Someone PLEASE explain to me what’s so good about Twilight?! What did YOU like about it?I love books but I don’t understand. =( I read the first book and my goal is to force myself to finish the series because I always have to finish what I start reading (which is why I own every single book written by all my favorite authors) but I can’t get myself to pick up another Twilight book.

I was also extremely mortified when I first saw the movie preview because I was so embarassed for everyone involved. Not like I should talk since they made millions off it but still, it was horribly lame and cliché.

  10. Edward Cullen. How do you fall in love with a fictional character BEFORE seeing him on film (admit it, you were in love with him before the movie came out)? I mean I was crazy over Legolas from LOTR but only after I watched the movie and saw Orlando Bloom with pointy ears, long white hair and in tights (otherwise he’s not that hot in real life). Do I have to read the rest of the books to have a revelation about his supposed hotness?

P.S. Don’t hate me because I didn’t like Twilight… I still love you guys. =(

ahaha. I don’t understand the Twilight…err “movement” either. Edward Cullen is creepy looking, I don’t know why every girl is like obsessed with him.

    heheh you don’t like football?
    omg ^_^

i lost 400 dollars on them damn cardinals -_-…..

    REPLY

Well I never bothered to try learn it.. way too complicated for my tastes. I’d rather watch hockey if I were to watch a sport. Lol. The one time I sat down with my boyfriend to watch it, I think I fell asleep 2 minutes into the game. :P

  3. Felisa says:

I still have to freakin’ wince every single time I have alcohol. Shhhhhhhhh. Haha

I used to not understand football. Then, I saw Tom Brady and now, I’m learning. It takes a motivator for most girls to understand it.

Woah. Chairlifts? I think I’d be scared of getting ON them.

    REPLY

I saw Tom Brady too but that didn’t motivate me at all. You can’t even see his face when he plays. :(

Chairlifts aren’t so bad once your on them… but omg, I get sooo scared getting off even though I’ve done it soo many times.

Ugh. Twilight will be the death of me. Every teeniebopper alive in my town has torn off their PINK sweatsuits in hopes that “Edward Cullen” will appear in his pale glory and ravage them.

I sound absolutely pretentious, but Twilight repulses me.

    Other than that, great post!

  5. Re iTunes. Do you mean without importing the music from your CD first? Because once it’s imported you can drag and drop y’no right?

Totally agreed re the pricing issues. I’m getting better at it now though but it’s taken years of re-training my brain!

I’ve been put off reading or watching twilight because I’ve heard nothing but bad things about it. A guy at work described the book characters as being one dimensional and lame and went to the movie thinking it HAD to be better only to find the movie characters lost any dimension or story line the book had.

    REPLY

Well just importing the MP3s on my computer right into my iPod. Well you can drag and drop.. but only from iTunes and I HATE ITUNES!! :@ I remember on my old MP3 players, you just have to open the drive in My Computer and just copy and paste your files over. So simple. :|

Twilight is good if your a sucker for romance … teenaged romance. That’s about it.

  6. emcee says:

I hate Twilight too! It’s kind of unfair for me to say it because I’ve never touched the books (or watched the movie) in my life but I refuse to be succumbed by this mania that is APPARENTLY better than Harry Potter (yeah, right).

And I totally agree with you on the alcohol thing. All my friends think I’m lame because I rarely drink, but seriously – it tastes bad and it makes people act weird. It’s funny but after a while you just feel sorry for people!

    REPLY

NO TWILIGHT CANNOT EVEN COMPARE TO HARRY POTTER. Harry Potter wasn’t the best writing in the world but it had substance and the characters were more developed— and my favorite part was that the plot was so richly complicated and everything was intertwined. Sigh. I think I’m going to read HP again soon. :P

  7. sarah says:

LOL…true, true on the last one. i did read all 4 Twilight books out of curiosity and boredom (cuz i read most of it at work through e-book).. it was kinda okay though for me cuz i dont really have any expectations except to atleast be entertained. ^_^

    REPLY

When I read Twilight, I wasn’t totally repulsed by the plot TOO MUCH.. it was just the style of writing and the characters that annoyed me. I was able to read the book in one sitting so that was good since I didn’t have to spend much time on it.

    REPLY

  8. jen says:

I never read Twilight. I’m tempted to give it a shot because so many of my friends read it (ones that I didn’t know even read books!) so I assumed it was the best book ever. But really, I want to know what the hype is about too, or is it just that..the “hype”?

And I LOL’d at the picture captions.

    REPLY

If you enjoy romance novels and all that lovey dovey stuff I think you might just like the books AND they are an extremely quick read. Don’t blame me if you hate them though!! :P

    REPLY

Yeah, I’m not a romance fan. I’ll play it safe and keep away from the Twilight. =P

    REPLY

  9. amor says:

Yeah, I have to admit, media made me read twilight. I got curious with all the hype…and I’m on my way to reading the second book.

    Don’t hate me.

    REPLY

I don’t hate you… I think any book that gets people reading is a good thing! I just don’t really like romance (cheesy romance at that) so that’s why I didn’t like Twilight. I’m going to eventually read the second book though just because I feel like I have to even though I dread it. :S

    REPLY

I’m not into romance, teeny-bopper novels as well (just making a special exception on Twilight for no particular reason).

Anyway, I respect your opinion =D mwah

I fell in love with Cullen before the movie… in fact the movie puts me off and I still haven’t seen it, eww. I do the same thing with books though, I started Twilight just as a means of procrastination since it was lying around the house, and then ended up buying the rest of the series and finishing all 4 books in 9 days :|

Being the cheesy person that I am,I read all 4 books and own all 4 books. I read them pretty quickly also because well it’s just a quick read..Althoughhh i agree with you completely on the fact that Bella’s annoying as hell or Kristin Stewart..whatever/whoever she is. i find it soo frustrating reading through her point of view because she was just annoying in every aspect. =( but i do love robert patterson, i’m sorry! lol, i love the idea of Edward..but i admit he was creepy at first.

I’m guilty of number 10 but I will tell you why I fell in love with the fictional character:

Instead of saying I Love You, Edward said “You are my life now”. and…

When he thought Bella had died, he went to the Volturi in Italy to beg for his own death coz he can’t just live another hundred years without Bella.

No human being will ever do that! Ha. Now, I want a vampire lover.

    REPLY

    I wouldn’t mind a vampire lover too… but one from Anne Rice’s books. :P

  17. Connie says:

OMG! #5 is so me! Whenever I see $7 lipsticks at the drug store, I’m like, “This crap is expensive! I’d rather wait to buy some from MAC!” Or the L’Oreal HIP eyeshadow–$6 was too much for it. I’d rather spend $20 on the Kat Von D one from Sephora that has pretty much the same exact two colors. I would never spend over $100 on drug store makeup, even though I can get more of it. I’d rather spend $100 at Sephora or MAC just because it seems to be a better deal.

& 9–I don’t understand the Twilight hype either. I’ll admit it–I think the font is far too big in the books. I don’t want to be reading teen novels when I’m 21! I also don’t want to go from reading classic literature for fun to reading poorly written bestsellers.

Hey! Thanks for commenting on my blog. Have you seen it after that? It got completely wiped not. Now I’m thinking of a new design and I’m not sure where to start. Any ideas?

Twilight – I own 3/4 of the series. I bought the first one myself. Read it half way and stopped and that was last summer. Then bought the 3rd one at Superstore for $1 – hardcover! The 2nd one was given to me as a gift.

They told me it was a book you couldn’t stop reading, that you *couldn’t* put it down. I put it down last summer and I haven’t picked it up since. Haha!

I like your blog design. Looks great!

But he SPARKLES, lol… The Edward in my head was definitely hotter than the Edward in the movie. Besides Edwards a way better bf then my real one… >_< maybe I need to upgrade. I read all 4 books while I was temping at ESPN to pass the time. Book 1 & 4 were my favs, can’t recall anything from book 2 or 3. I don’t get football either. Why do they stop every 5 secs.

so.. i practically agreed with 88.765% of everything you posted. lol. ESPECIALLY the lift thing. Why is it that I manage to fall every single time? And when I don’t.. someone has to come swing my way to knock me down. lol. I would probably have something to say about Edward.. or whoevs.. if I read. lol & the Itunes thing.. IF i had an IPOD. lol I’m probably one of the last people on earth who doesn’t have one. My 70 y/o aunt has one. lame. haha anyway. interesting post. made me think… WHY?! lol

    REPLY

I don’t mind the falling part too much about the chairlift because I fall enough already but just the thought of getting OFF them while it’s moving. *cringe*

I’m probably one of the last people on earth who doesn’t have one. My 70 y/o aunt has one.

Ahahaha that’s hilarious. It’s good how the iPod is bringing generations of people closer together though… technology-wise.

    REPLY

lol the falling part just sucks butt since everyones yelling “STAY DOWN STAY DOWN” .. last time i went i looked up and almost got beheaded! lol. that was interesting. The skiers behind me told me that if i fell then they would run over me. nice people huh? i’ll try better.. i think i’m going to big bear or something for vday weekend. lol. that ought-a-be interesting. :)

  21. Louise says:

Yeah, I don’t get football either. I kinda understand the rules, and I played a few games of flag football, which were fun, but I don’t understand why people WATCH it. It’s such a boring spectator sport.

As for #4, maybe he’s less scared than you, which is what makes him better at snowboarding. I think that’s why little kids are so good at picking up sports. They’re not scared of falling and hurting themselves.

And the Twilight thing. I have to admit, I had a little crush on Edward while I was reading the books. He was just so…perfect I guess. I hated the books but couldn’t stop reading it, so maybe I secretly loved them? They just seemed like bad fanfiction to me, but I couldn’t put it down. I like it the same way I like trashy TV.

Also, I had a huge crush on the actor who played Cullen in the movie ever since I saw him as Cedric in Harry Potter haha. But watching Twilight totally killed it for me. He was too “oh I’m so dark and brooding” after that.

    REPLY

Definitely. My boyfriend is less scared than me but out of EVERYTHING he does, he’s good at it just because he’s super determined. I’m sure if he actually tried at Photoshop, he could create something better than me (but then he’d have to catch up on my years of experience). I wish I learned a lot of things when I was little too because kids definitely learn quicker. My boyfriend is like a little kid. :P

bad fanfiction — that’s a good way to describe Twilight. :P I use to read fan-fiction a lot too (mainly related to Backstreet Boys when I was 12!!) and they were so bad yet so addicting.

Cedric and Edward is the same person?!? I didn’t know that… what a way to ruin an actor! Now when I re-watch HP and see Cedric, I’m going to see creepy Edward. *shudder*

I understand football mostly (though it was just yesterday that I found out what a safety was), but I rarely have the patience to sit through a whole game.

Count me in on hating Twilight. I think Edward is creepy as hell and Bella is pathetic. I read the first two and couldn’t read anymore. I read spoilers of the 3rd and 4th and…. wow.

    Football is so confusing. Wait. Do you mean American football or UK football (aka soccer, XD)? If it’s soccer, at least I understand the gameplay. IF it’s American football, I STILL don’t understand the gameplay. All I understand is that the ball needs to get to the goal and that’s it. I don’t get all the move two feet thing ~_~;;

And I haven’t read Twilight, but I read the Wikipedia synopsis and just reading that makes me NOT want to read the books. It just sounds really, BLEHG.

And iTunes is a pain. That’s why I refuse to use iPods. XD I’ll stick with the no name brand cheap mp3 players that’s drag and drop-able!

    REPLY

American football! There are too many rules and strategies. I’d rather watch straight-forward games like hockey and soccer. I guess a lot of people watch football mainly because it’s fun to watch it with a group of friends and cheer on your home team. I think if I were American (Canadian football sucks), I’d probably watch it too.

I do this to. I was just in an electronic store the other day trying to haggle down the price of a hairdryer, but I can go out and spend over a hundred dollars on a meal with my wife and not bat an eyelash. It makes sense at times though I think. For example, the hairdryer would do essentially the same thing regardless of how nice of one I got, but the difference between say, MacDonald’s and a fine Italian restaurant is quite worth the money you put into it (to me).

As for Twilight, I’m only around 200 pages into it and it’s hard for me to comment too much yet but the narrative is somewhat catchy and paced well. I can see why a lot of people hate it though; the writing and characters can be horrendously distracting. My guess is that most of the younger people who enjoy it simply haven’t read enough to know there is much, much better out there. Then again, just like with HP, if it gets a kid into reading I can’t complain too much I suppose.

I couldn’t agree with you more here! I think anything that gets people reading is awesome!

I was just talking to my boyfriend last night when we were out getting food which we do way too much. I was like “we gotta start being more conscious with our money and not waste it on things like this…” then I had a second thought and said that food is the only exception. Hey, everyone has to eat… life is all about the food!

My friend knows I don’t like stories such as Twilight but she insisted that I watch the movie for the sole reason of one scene that will explain why girls love Edward Cullen so much — the scene where he stopped a car that was about to crash Bella.

I still haven’t watched it yet but that piece of information motivates me to.

    I’m not a female that loves strong-prince-charming-saves-the-girl stories. :(

Most of the romance novels I’ve read always came with annoying and needy female characters so I get too annoyed. I read almost anything but I prefer fantasy and science-fiction the most. :P

nice article, you have some great points. no one is going to get mad at you for not knowing anything about football, itunes is the devil, but too many people don’t care because it looks cool, and twilight was targeted at young teen hot topic kids, that’s how it made money because thats the demographic that spends it the most foolishly, i think the books were too romancy.

Hahah I too find many drugstore items to be too expensive. Maybe because I don’t find spending $7-10 on drugstore brands to be worthwhile. I don’t think they’re worth it. But spending $25 on department store lippies is totally worth it! hahaha
