2008 Blog Memories

I know I should be writing about my actual 2008 memories and not my blog memories but I’m sure no one cares about my personal life anyway. ;)

I made 11 New Years resolution for 2008 and I’m proud to say that I kept 7 of them!! Can you guess which ones?

Other commitments I tried to make this past year was to watch and learn football and also learn how to golf but they never happened. You would think working on Madden NFL 08 for 9 months, a slight interest in football would spark up but to Boyfriend’s disappointment, that never happened— not even a tiny bit. Now let’s see what I can say about soccer next year.

My favorite blog moments/memories of 2008 and ones that selected readers thought were their favorite:

I’m in Cali!

Quick post since I’m still in Sacramento… but I’m coming home on Wednesday which I’m totally looking forward to. So far the trip has been fun, a lot of shopping, and eventful but extremely stressful and a lot of driving; being around like 30+ people all the time is just way too much for me because I’m that anti-social (I guess you’ll understand if you’ve been to a Vietnamese wedding but this is my first one and I’m like just in like OMG —in both a good and bad way). ;) I also got a total fashion faux-pas story I totally committed on purpose because I was too lazy.

The wedding was yesterday and that was fun. I got up at 6am to get ready and to get first dibs on showers and then later, Boyfriend informs me I didn’t even have to go to the first part if I didn’t want to! I wish he told me earlier because it was all in Vietnamese anyway and I could’ve used that extra sleep since I was power napping every chance I got throughout the day. At least it was an interesting experience; they were all like you better watch and learn and I’m like yeah right! I don’t plan on marrying for another 6-7 years… plenty of time.

Chop Restaurant Review

On Friday night, Boyfriend, N, D and I went to the new Chop Restaurant in Richmond at the Sandman Hotel for their dry run before their grand opening which means a complimentary meal for us… how can we say no to that? The restaurant which was divided into a lounge and dining area, which was huge, beautiful and intimate although the waiters were standing around talking to each other when we first walked in which kind of annoyed me. I guess that’s why they totally needed that dry run… most of them seemed like total… no0bz (although, very friendly noobs I must say).

We had our menu selections chosen for us; entrĂ©es included a porterhouse steak, rosemary lemon chicken, prime ribs and halibut (in order of what I thought was best to worst). The porterhouse steak was SO GOOD (as Giada would say) and lucky D chose it but it better be good because it was one of the most expensive things on the menu. I never usually order chicken at a restaurant because it’s almost always dry but the chicken Boyfriend had tonight was one of the best I’ve had (and I’m hard to impress when it comes to chicken breast!). The prime rib was meh… good but nothing too interesting. The halibut was good but they overcooked it. The best? The mash potatoes— I’m a mash potato freak! Yum. We had dinner with a bottle of Merlot and a couple of cocktails.

I wish they made us fill a survey at the end to let them know how ANNOYINGLY GOOD the service was. Our server had an intimidating blond trainer following him to make sure he goes through EVERY single procedure and we all felt so bad for the guy! If I were him, I don’t know, I think I might wet my pants with her following me around like that. He was so nice and soft-spoken but SO nervous— his hands were shaking so much when he poured us wine! I ordered a bellini and N asked for a Ceasar right after and when he left, she said, “omigod what if he gives me a ceasar salad instead?!” If that were to happen, we would’ve just shut our mouths and give it to Boyfriend to eat since we wouldn’t want our server to get in trouble. Fortunately, we got the right drinks. I’m sure he would’ve done a lot better if there wasn’t so much pressure and if he wasn’t forced to be annoying (like another server told me, “if I was a customer there, I’d probably kill the server!”). My only wish was that we got some bitchy waitress so we could complain but our guy was too nice. But I think I’m complaining a little too much for a complimentary dinner! :|

Our grand total came up to around $50 (just for alcohol) with a $20 tip. The night almost ended when I accidently ate a spoonful of horseradish and almost fell on the floor dying but I would definitely come back again.

I also want to congratulate Chop for joining the other winners of Vancouver’s Worst-Steakhouse-Restaurant-Website Award: Gothams and Keg (are they trying to imitate meat with those colors?!). Stonegrill doesn’t even deserve the award because their website is practically non-existant. You would think for these prominent restaurants in Vancouver, they could afford better websites.

Michelle Obama: What Should She Wear?

Michelle Obama

Who says these are bleak times? On one matter at least, designers are positively euphoric. That is the Obama presidency, a two-part point of light. While much of the glee centers around the President-elect and his policies, Michelle Obama radiates a powerful style all her own. So step aside, Angelina. You too, Madonna, not to mention the bevy of pop tarts, gossip girls, “High School Musical” grads and even potential Oscar divas, now all suddenly second-tier. The American fashion industry hasn’t had a catch this big since, well, since another icon of Democratic chic took up residency on Pennsylvania Avenue in 1961.

For the big guns at least, dressing Michelle may prove even more of a challenge, since her chic is more lowercase democratic than was Jackie’s. Throughout the campaign, the first lady-to-be has avoided all major names save Narciso Rodriguez, while showing a proclivity for locals (Chicago’s Maria Pinto), young types (Thakoon; Jason Wu) and cost-conscious labels (Donna Ricco; J. Crew).

Nevertheless, just about everyone yearns to dress Michelle, who could raise the profile of American fashion around the world. Yet with the exception of Maria Cornejo, her current favorites, as well as a few majors, declined WWD’s request for sketches. Some are loath to presume to offer unsolicited advice, while others, it seems, are definitely in the Inaugural sweepstakes and prefer, or have been asked, to keep their participation low-pro.

But plenty more happily offered their visions for Michelle and her charming first daughters, for the big day and evening events of Jan. 20.
