Kids… and their strange ways.

My boyfriend’s 4-year-old-nephew, J*, seems to have a little identity crisis going on which has been going on for a while. HE SEEMS TO THINK HE’S BLACK! The thing is that he is Vietnamese. This started when I first got my Wii and a friend (who is brown) made his Mii character named Amaan’s Ass. Now J* got excited when he saw Amaan’s Ass and insisted on choosing him everytime he played a game. Soon enough, he made his first Mii character, and no surprise, IT WAS BLACK.

… and then he made a dozen more, and they were all black.

J*
Apparently they do… 8)

Today I was watching him play Playground Wii (which is his favorite game at the moment), and I asked him which character he was and he replied, “I’m the black guy.” Later, I asked him, “why do you like black people so much, are they cooler than Asians or something?” He answered “yes” in a very matter-of-fact way and then added, “I’m cool, so I’m black too!!

Hmm.. don’t ask me how this got embedded in his head because I don’t know and I assure you that I have nothing much to do with it.

Edit – I should mention that he’s only 4-years-old. And he doesn’t act like he’s black (I think his mom will kill him).

And today, D* said this to me (he was in fact bragging):

Auntie Katy, guess what? I’m 6-years-old and I have MSN!!

Oh god, soon I’m going to start seeing him on some played-out community like VancouverXchange or something. Sometimes it’s best to keep kids illiterate until they are 16 or so, just so they stay off those things. Just kidding.

Ugh. Tell me about it. Kids nowadays are so hung up on black culture. Nothing bad, really, but it’s disturbing when you hear an Asian kid dressed like a grown man rapper and talks like one.

and here i was thinking my 5 year old was buggin out. my son is black, so am i by the way. and when he plays games online where they can pic characters, he pics the lighter skinned child that looks similar to that of an asian instead of the brown boy tha is african american. i ask him why and he told me “i’m the chinese boy. his name is tien…like my best friend at school”. can’t argue with that. i love the fact that he’s able to see the difference in cultures but not to a point of disliking the other because he’s different. kids are the best!!! :)

    Hehehe… That’s so adorable/hilarious!

I probably wouldn’t be a great influence on boyfriend’s nephew in this respect. :P Whenever someone mock-insults me, I always slip into my “mad black woman” character: “…. Whatchu sayin’ I *faaaaat* now? Oh, I get it, I get it, just ’cause I black I suddenly got some more juhhhnk in mah truhhhnk?” etc. etc. I’ve even got the hand and head movements down pat.
